This New GPU Chip is Going to Save Millions

And neither does the technology that supports them. One such company that just hasn’t slowed down is NVIDIA, as they’ve conquered the market with their innovative GPU chip technology.

In 2018, NVIDIA released the GeForce RTX 2000 series of graphics cards onto the market. Up to 75% faster than the company’s previous GTX 1080 cards, and featuring their proprietary Turing and Ampere architectures, the cards have been hailed as a generational leap for PC gaming. But their most revolutionary aspect is the ability to handle real-time hardware ray tracing. With current technology expanding and the demand for new hardware, Nvidia, the owners of the RTX series have been providing their metaverse-building software for free for consumers!

What is Ray Tracing?

Ray tracing is a graphical technique for modelling light and shadow in a digital space. Every ray of light produced in a scene is mapped and tracked, allowing for exceptionally realistic lighting effects. Even the surfaces the light is reflecting off are considered, with the light changing colour and texture depending on whether it reflects off glass, sand, clouds, or water.

It’s by no means a new technology, as it’s been around since the 1970’s. This ray tracing technology was first debuted in high-budget blockbuster films, though today we see a variety of applications that allow the masses to enjoy the realism of such high-tech innovations. Most commonly used in film, the technique has been used to help blend CGI imagery and real footage into a cohesive whole, as seen in many of the recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises. Some animated films have been entirely ray traced, with the first being Pixar’s Monsters University in 2013 – but these have been relatively few in numbers.

While cinema has made use of ray tracing for a long time now, its use in video games has been hampered by the demands the technique puts on hardware. Put simply, ray tracing takes up a vast amount of processing power. It’s one thing to spend months getting every light source right in a film sequence. Doing that in real time as a player moves through a game world is a very different thing indeed. The light rays have to be constantly tracked and changed as the world around them changes, which can put undue stress on a graphics processing unit, and in many cases, lead to significant slow-down when playing a game.

The RTX Cards: Dynamic and Powerful

Before now, developers have had to rely on pre-rendered reflections and lighting techniques to get the best look possible for their games. Static lighting effects had to be coded to shade and illuminate a level or map during development, and while these could be made to look absolutely beautiful at times, they weren’t the real thing. Movements just didn’t have that realistic feel.

NVIDIA’s RTX cards allow for game worlds to be rendered dynamically, and far faster than ever before. With this evolutionary GPU chip, the processes that previously took a film or animation studio weeks to perfect now take just a few seconds in-game. That being said, the demands put on the card by a given game are less than a truly intense film scene, but are still significant enough that it took until 2018 for NVIDIA to become the first to offer it in a commercial package. That’s where the money saving element comes in.

RTX cores solve the requirement for additional computing power by assigning dedicated cores to the real-time ray tracing calculations. Each ray tracing core contains a pair of separate units, with one processing ray-triangle intersection tests, and the other performing bounding box tests. This reduces the strain these calculations place on the graphics card, and simultaneously frees it up to handle other tasks just as effectively.

The RTX series also incorporates Deep Learning Super Sampling, or DLSS. This is an AI-augmented image upscaling technique, allowing for lower-resolution images to be brought up to far higher resolutions with less computing power than anything else on the market. This avoids putting too much stress on the GPU, and with the saved power, allows for higher frame rates and better graphical settings for any given resolution.

Early versions of DLSS had to be tailored to each specific game, but upgrades to the technology in 2020 mean that the AI neural networks are now trained generically and can boost the resolution and performance of any game with the appropriate support. Just like the ray casting techniques that have made the RTX series so famous, DLSS is a proprietary NVIDIA technology, reliant on its unique architecture, and isn’t available as part of other graphics card.

How Much Does the Best GPU Chip Cost?

The RTX series is undoubtedly one of the best graphics processing units on the market right now, and the price points actively reflect that. The current generation of RTX, the GeForce 30 series released in 2020, range in price from $329 (£238) for the most basic RTX 3060 to a potentially imposing $1499 (£1089) for the top-of-the-line RTX 3090. Mid-range units, like the RTX 3070 and the RTX 3080, retail for around $499 (£362) to $699 (£507), respectively.

These prices may well be intimidating to the average gamer or computer enthusiast, especially as the generation of NVIDIA cards before the introduction of RTX offered its most impressive graphics processor for $600. But these prices reflect the new technology and the efforts involved in making these innovations a reality. Only NVIDIA offers both real-time ray tracing with AI-assisted image upscaling in the same package on the commercial market.

Perhaps more importantly, the price reflects the fact that these cards are not merely an upgrade for a gaming PC, they’re future proofing your machine. Saving money. In the long run – millions.

AMD’s most recent high-end release, the Radeon RX 6000 series, has begun incorporating real-time ray tracing. This development from NVIDIA’s chief competitor in the PC market is a sign that ray tracing is going to be a key part of the next generation of graphics technology.

As well as this, price increases have been hitting the graphics processor market hard in recent months. Between the current pandemic causing a shortage of raw materials and crypto-currency miners buying such powerful GPU chips in bulk to use in their operations, scarcity has made NVIDIA’s offerings, as well as those of their competitors, both more expensive and harder to come by. These increases show no sign of slowing down, which is certainly an incentive to consider getting your hands on one sooner rather than later.

The Future of GPU Chip? Worth Investing In

When the RTX graphics cards were first announced, the very idea of real-time ray tracing for video games was met with mockery and derision from some corners of the gaming community. Many saw it as simply a gimmick, a marketing stunt with plenty of flash, monetary demand, and little substance. But, after the RTX series was released to the public, even the most enthusiastic detractors were hard-pressed to deny the noticeable improvements in visuals the technology brought to their favourite titles. And it seems as though the industry agrees with them.

Despite how the number of games that actually supported the enhancements the RTX brought were limited at release, the number of games that will be incorporating ray tracing and the proprietary DLSS enhancer in the next few years seems set to rise. This is especially true as NVIDIA has made it easier than previously ever before to incorporate support for both technologies during development. This includes flagship titles in major franchises, with the newest Call of Duty and Battlefield entries supporting the use of real-time ray tracing, and cult development studio Remedy Entertainment specifically working with NVIDIA to tailor their games to the AI behind DLSS.

There are many new posts being uploaded to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok and the like which are circulating about the reliability and performance of the RTX series – this short form video content is a great way to find out just how good the brand new graphics cards are – don’t just take our word for it, the high cost might deter you, but the thousands of tiktoks, posts and shares online hyping the performance cannot lie!

Even some older games have been updated to benefit from the graphical upgrades. This includes  modern classics like The Witcher 3 and Minecraft, as well as legendary hits like Quake II. Given the wide and increasing uptake of the proprietary technology by the highest levels of the games industry, it’s clear both techniques are fast becoming a standard for new mainstream releases.

Yes, both the RTX GeForce 20 and 30 series are pricey on Amazon, and other stores, and the number of games that support their cutting-edge hardware could be considered minimal right now. But getting in on the ground floor of the next generation of graphical technology is, in terms of a final analysis, more than worth it. Many individuals in the PC gaming community are used to constantly upgrading their machines as new parts and add-ons become available – it’s become an inevitable element of being a part of such an ever-changing industry. But it is an expensive practice. Keeping a gaming PC at the top of its game in an ever-evolving market is no easy feat, and staying on your toes amongst such demanding crowds is vital. 

Looking at the Bigger Picture

The NVIDIA RTX GPU chips are not just revolutionary or cutting-edge, although they are certainly both of those things to begin with. But they go deeper than that. They are an opportunity for you to rest on your laurels, to save on expenditure over the long term (for both yourself and game developers) and keep your favourite titles looking as good as they deserve to. Just as they were intended to within the first place. The graphical enchantments they offer will be invaluable for any gaming setup, especially as studios and consumers themselves begin to push for more and more photorealistic and hardware-intensive graphics. And, as previously noted, the market for GPU chips like these is getting much tighter these days. A graphics card like the GeForce 20’s or 30’s that can see you through the next few years without needing to be swapped out anytime soon might just be a smart investment, even if the initial outlay is a significant one.
